Antibiotic Treatment of Community-Acquired Pneumonia: A Quality Improvement Project to Increase Pediatric ED Discharge Prescription Adherence to Shorter Antibiotic Duration Guidelines

and

The Pediatric Sports Injuries Following the Initiation of COVID (PSIFIC) Study

In the first of these paired talks from two UCSF pediatric emergency medicine fellows, Monica Charpentier, MD, PhD, reports findings from a study focused on enhancing antimicrobial stewardship related to ED visits for pediatric community-acquired pneumonia – a condition accounting for 1.5 million ambulatory visits per year. Highlighting the value of using an appropriate narrow-spectrum antibiotic for the shortest effective treatment course, Charpentier describes a strategy for streamlining discharges that embrace these options. Next, Adnan Haque, MD, presents his study on the COVID pandemic's effects on pediatric sports injuries presenting to the ED. With an eye to helping emergency teams be better prepared, Haque offers findings related to specific activities, types of injury, and severity of conditions, including shifts in the number of injuries requiring surgery.

Learning Objectives:

  • List the benefits of shorter duration courses of outpatient antibiotics for treatment of pediatric community acquired pneumonia.

  • Explain the benefits of statistical process control methodology in studying quality improvement.

  • Identify the key components of a p-chart in a quantitative time series study design.

  • Accurately diagnose pediatric sports injuries based on changes in activity trends following the initiation of the COVID-19 involving more ligamentous injuries and fewer contact injuries.

  • Recognize the increased severity of injuries found in patients presenting to the emergency department following the initiation of pandemic protocols.
