Electrophysiology for the Primary Care Providers

This talk from pediatric electrophysiologist Karyn M. Austin, MD, PhD, looks at the mechanisms behind rhythm disturbances in young patients with structurally normal hearts. She explains when to worry about common issues, including supraventricular tachycardia and bradycardia; notes key questions for taking a family history; and describes the variation of typical symptoms for infants, children and teens. She also busts myths around exercise restriction and ablation eligibility, then finishes with a lesson to help PCPs pick up on ECG tracings that always warrant referral.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the signs and symptoms of abnormal tachycardia vs bradycardia
  • Distinguish the ECG findings that should always prompt a referral to cardiology (and those that shouldn't)
  • Describe the features of the clinical and family history that warrant referral to Pediatric Inherited Arrhythmias Clinic
