Managing the Storm: Sick Day Strategies for Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes

Anthony Parish, MD, presents on increased risk of diabetes-related ketooacidosis (DKA).

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify key components of sick day management in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes, including continuous insulin administration, frequent glucose and ketone monitoring, and hydration strategies, to prevent diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

  • Demonstrate appropriate insulin dose adjustments during illness by applying ISPAD (International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes) guidelines to clinical case scenarios, distinguishing between hyperglycemia with and without ketosis, and determining when to escalate care.

  • Differentiate the sick day management needs of pediatric patients from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds by incorporating strategies for families with limited access to healthcare resources, literacy barriers, and varying levels of diabetes self-management education.
