Marian Roan, RD, MPH
Marian Roan is a dietitian who provides nutrition therapy for children of all ages with special needs and complex neurological conditions. She specializes in managing epilepsy with ketogenic diet therapy, a high-fat, low-carbohydrate dietary treatment that can help patients with seizures that haven't responded to medication. Since 2010, she has served as lead dietitian for the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Ketogenic Diet Therapy Program. She also works with infants and children with a variety of nutrition challenges.
Roan's research revolves around ketogenic diet therapy in patient care. Her specific interests include ketogenic formulations of intravenous nutrition products, ketogenic diet therapy during critical illness and side effects of long-term ketogenic diet therapy.
Roan completed her internship in dietetics at the University of California, Berkeley. She completed a master of public health degree, with a specialty in public health nutrition, at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. She is a certified specialist in pediatric nutrition and a certified nutrition support clinician.
Roan served on the expert panel that developed international guidelines on safe and effective intravenous formulations of ketogenic diet therapy in children. She has also given presentations sharing her expertise on the ketogenetic diet to international audiences. She mentors medical residents, dietetic interns and undergraduate nutrition students in infant and child nutrition.
